Antimicrobial technology for water supplies

7 May 2020
Article

Our cities and buildings have always been shaped by disease. It was bubonic plague that changed the design of everything from modern street grids to drainpipes. Nineteenth century cholera prompted the introduction of sewage systems. Fear of tuberculosis inspired an era of white-painted rooms and hygienic tiled bathrooms. Today we are imagining what the post-Coronavirus world will look like.

In the coming years, people are not just going to want to wash their hands more, they are going to be concerned about the quality of the water that arrives in their homes and in their workplace.

In hygiene critical areas such as food preparation and healthcare or in large water systems found in office blocks and residential care homes, a waterborne pathogen can pose a significant risk to hygiene standards.

Regular tubing and hoses can also degrade over time, allowing chemicals and contaminants to leach into water supplies, increasing the risk of bacteria forming biofilms. When this occurs, bacteria can thrive, particularly when there is infrequent use of the water supply in warm conditions. These microbes not only present a potential health hazard, they can also impact the performance of the piping by impairing water flow.

Biomaster antimicrobial technology is easily applied to water pipework, hose and filters to provide long-lasting, effective protection against harmful bacteria.

The technology is suitable for use in almost all potable water and waste water supply applications, protecting against harmful waterborne bacteria such as Legionella, Pseudomonas and Shigella.

Antimicrobial pipework and hosing protected with Biomaster has been proven to be effective against common waterborne pathogens, providing 24/7 product protection.

Antimicrobial technology can also be applied to filters and showerheads. When water flows through a regular showerhead, the large surface area of the spray plate can cause limescale deposits and bacterial growth as droplets separate from the main water stream.

Inserts and antimicrobial filters protected with Biomaster inhibit the growth of bacteria which can cause biofilms, dramatically reducing the risk of cross-contamination from waterborne pathogens.

Biomaster technology can also help maintain stringent water quality in equipment such as ice machines and water dispensers.

Biomaster can be added at any stage of the manufacturing process and is available in masterbatch, liquid or powder formulations. The controlled release of the active ingredient provides powerful, effective antimicrobial protection for the lifetime of the product.

Highly effective at low addition rates, Biomaster has been tested in hundreds of applications to provide up to 99.99% reduction against harmful bacteria including MRSA, E. coli and Salmonella.

We can provide free-of-charge antimicrobial samples for you to test to ensure that incorporating Biomaster antimicrobial technology into your range of building materials or construction product specification is as straightforward as possible.

All of our antimicrobial treated solutions are independently tested at a leading laboratory to ISO 22196 to ensure of a high quality efficacy against the microbes your product and end application requires.
