The rugged construction and proven performance of Promat’s Durasteel® fire and blast protection system will be helping protect aircraft, passengers and ground staff when the New Doha International Airport opens in December. The Promat Durasteel® has been used to encase a series of substation buildings which are located close to the airport’s runways and taxiways.
With the airport expected to handle 320,000 aircraft movements and 50 million passengers per year, safety is a key consideration. The Durasteel® barrier and ceiling systems created around the substation buildings provide complete two-way fire and blast protection. Installed by The Invicta Group, the systems have been designed to contain any transformer explosions that occur inside the substations, and also to protect the transformers housed in the buildings from external fires and blasts.
Promat DURASTEEL® has been specifically developed to provide rugged and reliable performance in barrier, ducting, door and ceiling applications. The composite Promat DURASTEEL® panels feature a fibre-reinforced cement core which is mechanically bonded to punched steel sheets on both outer surfaces. Being classed as ‘non-combustible’ to BS 476: Part 4:1970, and to Clause 10 of EN 13501-1:2002, confirms the exceptional fire resistance provided by Promat DURASTEEL®, which is also strong, extremely durable and resistant to the effects of both impact and moisture. The system is unaffected by the effects of fire fighters’ hoses and so retains its ability to perform as required, even during a fire.
Promat DURASTEEL® is available in a wide range of specifications to satisfy many different types of application, and an interactive DVD which provides more details on the system is now available from Promat.
New Doha International Airport is the latest in a long line of Middle East projects to benefit from Durasteel as its preferred high-specification fire and blast protection system. 94 separate Durasteel fire barriers were installed in underground tunnels at the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Plant, where they now provide effective fire compartmentation to trenches and basements which house cables and other vital equipment. 40 demountable Durasteel fire barriers were also installed in 19 separate underground and overground stations on the Dubai Metro Green Line, each one designed to prevent the spread of fire in a public area.
