PROJECT REQUIREMENT
An historic school situated in picturesque Cheshire, Alderley Edge School for Girls, was experiencing problems with water ingress to its gymnasium building. The roof was in desperate need of repair.
Pressure was high to get the roof completed in the school summer holiday, while also achieving a superior aesthetic finish that imitated a zinc roof. An added challenge was the large amounts of asbestos tile, fascias, soffits and rooflights, all of which had to be removed and disposed of under controlled conditions before work could begin.
Originally the client and architect were considering refurbishing the roof with zinc, however due to tight timescales and the expense involved, another route needed to be found that offered the same aesthetically pleasing finish.
SIKA SARNAFIL SOLUTION
It was decided that a Sika Sarnafil single ply roofing system should be specified for the project, because it could effectively emulate a zinc roof and be installed speedily, as well as offering the client a robust guarantee.
Contractor, City Build Manchester, employed Richmond Roofing (Single Ply) Ltd as a trusted partner to complete the works. As a Sika Sarnafil Registered Contractor, Richmond Roofing had the training and the expertise to achieve the desired finish using décor profiles within the allotted time.
Luckily, Richmond Roofing was allowed to analyse the full asbestos report before work commenced, making safe, targeted removal possible. Following this, they got to work installing new plywood decking and Sika Sarnafil warm roof system over an area of 750m2, along with new SarnaLite rooflights – all during the five week school summer holiday and a national PIR shortage.
All materials were loaded up onto the roof before work started, to save valuable time. A team of five experienced fitters worked on the roof, each one dedicated to perfect workmanship. Helped along by glorious weather, the work was completed to such a high standard, and to such a tight schedule, that Richmond Roofing was asked to complete a further section of roof. In fact, the client would have had the whole school done if time had allowed!
Many people in the industry have been astounded by the short time period in which the job was completed, considering the high standard of installation and complex level of detailing. This was achieved thanks to the strong pre-existing relationships between Richmond Roofing, the asbestos sub-contractor, City Build, and Sika Sarnafil. Richmond Roofing was able to achieve the best price for the client and the supply chain was in place, a result of collaboration and first-class logistics. In addition, the Sika Sarnafil system was easy and quick to install, with the knowledge of the trained experts at Richmond.
Owing to the outstanding workmanship and aesthetic finish, Richmond Roofing was awarded Sika Sarnafil Refurbishment Project of the Year 2017 for this project.
