Sika flooring continues the Olympic legacy at Velodrome

14 Oct 2015
Case study

One of the most popular venues during the London Olympics, the 6000 seat velodrome in Stratford was reopened in 2014 with its refurbished reception areas benefiting from a resilent, durable, and high performance flooring system from global building products manufacturer Sika.

The velodrome forms part of the new Lee Valley Velopark and also includes BMX, mountain biking and road cycling facilities.  With 600,000 people expected each year, the Olympic Legacy Committee were looking for a durable, easy to clean and non-slip floor which also offered impressive aesthetic qualities.  Developed to offer an outstanding surface finish and exceptional protection against heavy footfall, abrasion and chemical exposure – the SikaFloor system proved ideal for the heavy footfall of this stunning bicycling venue.

The specification comprised of a Sikafloor 264 broadcast with anti-slip quartz aggregate.  A two part, coloured, epoxy resin, Sika 264 provides impressive protection against mechanical stress, abrasion, chemicals and water.  This was then topped off with a layer of Sikafloor 305W, a matt finish seal coat which offers excellent resistance to the effects of UV light.

Extremely tough and durable and with a life expectancy to match, Sika’s flooring systems are designed to fulfil an almost endless combination of functional and aesthetic requirements and meet all industry requirements for mechanical and chemical resistance, impermeability and fire resistance.

As an alternative to traditional finishes, Sika flooring systems can serve any number of specifier demands on a wide range of projects.  Joint free and easy to maintain, they are an ideal choice to meet the high aesthetic requirements of commercial and public buildings and can be used in schools, offices, retail, leisure as well as meeting the strict hygiene standards of the healthcare industry.  They are also an ideal choice to meet the demands of manufacturing facilities, airports and shopping malls where a durable floor is a must.

With the Lee Valley Velopark now open, Sika’s proven range of floor solutions met all the customer’s requirements and has ensured the nation’s bicycling enthusiasts will have a venue that will stand the test of time.
