Ysgol Greenhill School, Wales

13 Jul 2018
Case study

Ysgol Greenhill School is a secondary school in the coastal town of Tenby, Pembrokeshire. With approximately 1200 pupils on roll, it is one of the largest secondary schools in Wales. The roofs identified were suffering from several problems making refurbishment a high priority. The school wanted a solution that delivered a robust, long-lasting system that could be quickly and safely installed, from a manufacturer that could provide comprehensive technical support throughout the project. IKO assisted Pembrokeshire County Council with a detailed survey report, including intrusive core sample analysis. The roofs were suffering from water ingress, pooling water and poor heat retention so decision was made to replace the roofs throughout. New rooflights and a tapered insulation scheme were also specified. The project was started in July 2017 and completed in October the same year.

Solution
The IKO Ultra Prevent system included IKO enertherm ALU Insulation which increased the school’s overall thermal efficiency and reduce heating bills. The tapered insulation was specified to create more falls, assisting in the reduction of ponding water. Fire-retardant Torch-On Ultra Prevent Cap Sheet with graphite firewall technology were used with a self-adhesive underlay which reduced the use of flame on-site and for a quick, clean installation. IKO Superlite triple-glazed structural rooflights were also fitted to allow more natural light into the classrooms, while reducing glare and noise for a more comfortable learning environment. The project was successfully completed providing the school a BBA approved system with a 25 year single point guarantee.

Installation
Due to inclement weather during the programme it was necessary to undertake some of the work during term time, therefore, strict security measures were put in place to ensure
their safety and that of the staff. The central roof section was of single ply construction with significant old insulation boards in situ. This area was fully stripped to ensure a surface suitable for the installation of the new waterproofing system. An additional challenge was designing and delivering tapered insulation on the various levels of the four roofs. This was completed successfully alongside checks to ensure excess water could easily be cleared.
