Tall Storeys from Scandinavia

In response to the increasingly urgent issue of climate change, low carbon construction solutions are rapidly being developed. Timber frame has been one natural solution, but the demands of urban intensification require structural systems suitable for higher rise buildings. Swedish Wood, which accounts for around half of all wood imported into the UK, is taking the initiative to support this development, building a completely new industry with a focus on engineered wood products, such as glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT).

This event will present some of the exemplar multi-storey buildings in Scandinavia, relating them to emerging developments in the UK using examples of best practice.

Speakers include:
 - Robert Schmitz, partner at White Arkitekter, will talk about their hybrid approach, using CLT and glulam combined with steel and concrete, to the 19-storey Skellefteå Cultural Centre in Sweden.

- Daniel Wilded, Martinsons, will talk about the latest tall timber buildings across Scandinavia and best practice for UK architects.

The seminar will be chaired by Andrew Waugh of Waugh Thistleton Architects, well known for their pioneering work on CLT multi-storey residential buildings in Hackney. Andrew will talk about his practice’s projects and put them in the context of the latest developments in Building Regulations.

The presentations will be followed by an audience Q&A, with the event coming to a conclusion at 8.30pm.

Registration will begin at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. The event is free but booking is essential.
